The purpose of the BSc (Hons) Construction and the Built Environment (Quantity Surveying) Graduate Apprenticeship course is to produce graduates with the relevant skills and knowledge to work in the highly diverse and challenging building and civil engineering sectors in the UK and overseas.

The Apprenticeship equips apprentices with the theory and practical skills to be able to manage all costs relating to building and civil engineering projects from the initial calculations to the final accounts. It is developed in partnership with industry so you will be up to date with the latest technologies in the field. As an apprentice, you will develop technical, legal, analytical and evaluation skills in contractual frameworks, costing a project and enhancing value for money, while still achieving the required client expectations, standards, and quality. Glasgow Caledonian University's common good values and principles are embedded in the Apprenticeship, which aims to produce graduates with a broad awareness of the various legal, ethical and professional responsibilities of a quantity surveyor.

A Graduate Apprenticeship is the perfect opportunity for you to develop your skills and experience and progress to the role of a RICS Chartered Surveyor with your current employer, whilst you continue to gain experience in-role.  According to the, the average salary for a quantity surveyor is £48,000 and chartered surveyors earn around 38% more than their non-chartered counterparts.

There is a current shortage of quantity surveyors in today's construction industry. The Graduate Apprenticeship course gives employers the opportunity to recruit new talent and support them through the Apprenticeship or to upskill current employees. Most employers use both models to increase their skills pipeline within the business.

All Apprenticeships are fully-funded by Skills Development Scotland. Skills, knowledge, academic qualifications and experience will all be used to inform at which level of the programme candidates will commence their education.

This Apprenticeship will prepare candidates for working in an industry which is a key driver for the economy. As a quantity surveyor you can expect to work in different environments that range widely in terms of what each role offers as a day to day job.

Graduates may embark on a range of career pathways including working in the commercial sector on landmark development projects such as offices, hotels and apartments, transport and infrastructure schemes working on high profile rail, road and water projects, office-based position for a consultancy, on-site roles within a contractor’s organisation. There are multiple directions in which you can take your career as a quantity surveyor. As you gain more experience you can move into other careers within the construction industry such as project management or client-led development management.
